Hur was very important. He was a leader who helped settle disputes. He was a man of integrity because he could be counted on to help do “what had to get done”. He was the son of Caleb (not the spy who agreed with God), the father of Uri, and the grandfather of Bezalel. Hur helped Moses (Ex 17:10-12), He was a leader of the people of Israel (Ex 24:14), and he had confidence in him to judge correctly (Ex 24:14)
Hur is in the Bible to show us that it takes all of us. You do not have to have a great name. Sometimes it is the people who are not mentioned prominently who do the most work. He was faithful in the little things. He did not have a problem doing the “trivial and mundane”. After all, the greatest thing he was remembered for was holding up Moses’ arms to help Israel defeat the Amalekites.
This is what we need to do, no matter what our status is; pray for our leadership, President, spiritual authority. We should do this because we are part of a “bigger picture”. Hur was willing to jump in and do something that others might not have wanted to do. He was willing to be in the background. By showing himself in the little task of holding Moses’ hands up (Ex 17:10-12), God elevated him to a position of leadership (Ex 24:14).
Through Hur’s life I think we can learn four things. As Christians we should:
- Be willing
- Be humble
- Be faithful
- Be righteous
